Matías Viña has joined Cruzeiro after a frustrating spell at River Plate, criticising a delay between Flamengo and the Argentine club in finalising his move but welcoming the outcome.

"When Cruzeiro showed they wanted to sign me, I was very motivated to come. I told my agent that it took too long to reach an agreement between the two teams, the one I was loaned to, River Plate, and the one I belong to, Flamengo. But there was time to sort everything out and I am very happy to be here with you," he told Central da Toca.

Cruzeiro have taken the left back on loan to the end of this season, with a purchase option set at 4.5 million dollars, about R$ 23 million.

Cruzeiro will not pay his wages until December. Flamengo made River Plate cover the full salary to end the prior loan, so Viña is paid while playing for Cruzeiro.

He has not played for River Plate since May 2026, his last outing a 1-0 win over Rosario Central in the Argentine league semi-final.

Flamengo signed him from Roma in early 2024 for about R$ 43 million, with a deal through 2028. A serious knee injury in August 2024 sidelined him for 10 months.

He made 32 appearances for Flamengo, scoring one and assisting two, and was part of the Brasileiro, Copa do Brasil and Libertadores winning squads.
