Marco Friedl cut a despondent figure after Werder Bremen’s defeat to St. Pauli, admitting the team currently have no self confidence. According to BuLi News, the result was a third successive loss that dropped Werder into the bottom two.
It was an especially difficult afternoon for goalkeeper Mio Backhaus, whose rare error allowed Hauke Wahl’s header to slip through his hands for the opener. Werder had the better of the first half before conceding from what Friedl felt was an unexpected moment.
Friedl said he was practically speechless and had not seen the game ending that way. He stressed that mistakes feel like s**t, praised Backhaus for an outstanding season in which he has often saved them, and insisted such things happen.
Head coach Daniel Thioune shared that view, noting that in a normal world every goalkeeper saves that but there would be no scapegoating. He instead pointed to a lack of cutting edge, saying you should not be looking at the keeper in the 60th minute when he concedes if you have not taken your chances.
The barren run is weighing on the squad, with Friedl acknowledging it shows on the pitch. He said they are failing to finish at one end and gifting avoidable goals at the other.
Werder are now 13 matches without a win. The pressure will only intensify next weekend when Heidenheim travel to the Weserstadion for a match that already feels pivotal.
