Marco Gabbiadini has praised Luke O’Nien after the Sunderland defender delivered a Man of the Match display against Oxford United in the FA Cup on Sunday, helping the club into the fifth round for the first time in 11 years.
“You wouldn’t expect anything less, would you really? That’s just him. He’s had a bit of a tough year, after being involved in everything that goes on with Sunderland over the last, gosh, how many years? Four, five, six years? So, it’s a nice outing for him, nice room for him to wear the armband as well.” He was speaking on BBC Radio Newcastle’s Total Sport.
Opportunities have been scarce for the 31-year-old, whose only other start this season came at Everton in the previous round.
O’Nien captained the side at the Kassam Stadium and turned in a typically combative shift at centre-back.
After the win, O’Nien said the squad regard themselves as a good team striving to become a great one by nailing the details at any ground. He added that dreaming of Wembley is one of their goals, though league duties leave unfinished business this week.
