Jocelin Ta Bi will frame his debut shirt after making his first Sunderland appearance in the FA Cup fourth round at Oxford United. Introduced after the interval with Régis Le Bris’ side holding a narrow lead, he drove at defenders, roused the away end and cut inside to shoot just wide.

According to Sunderland Echo, the 21-year-old, a permanent January signing returning from injury, was excited by his bow and intends to frame the shirt at home. More than 1,000 travelling supporters backed Sunderland at the Kassam Stadium.

He reflected that missing his best chance is something to improve, but felt the win made it a good day for him and the team.

On his arrival last month, Le Bris called him a young winger with rare explosiveness and one-v-one courage, and said the staff must build his profile for the Premier League. He noted timelines are uncertain and underlined the club’s plan to develop youngsters rather than rely on experienced names such as Granit or Nordi.

Then-sporting director Kristjaan Speakman described Ta Bi as a dynamic, explosive right-sided wide player with high potential, and said Sunderland would integrate him patiently while supporters enjoy his attributes.

Having overcome setbacks to reach this point, the Ivorian now hopes his Oxford cameo is the first of many in red and white.
