Marco Reus on why he didn’t move within the Bundesliga: Having to play against Dortmund doesn’t suit my nature.”

Speaking to Sport Bild (via @bvbnewsblog), Marco Reus has revealed the reason why he did not move within the Bundesliga and instead moved to the MLS when his contract expired at Borussia Dortmund.

Reus left Dortmund after 12 years at the club this past summer after the expiry of his contract, the 35-year-old had been linked with a return to his previous club Borussia Mönchengladbach but ultimately ended up moving to the USA. On why he didn’t move within the Bundesliga, Reus said:

“There are two things: firstly, the connection to BVB. Suddenly playing for another club in the Bundesliga – and then having to play against BVB, doesn’t suit my nature. “And secondly, it was probably my last chance to take a big step and experience such an adventure.”

Reus then confirmed that he had received enquiries from other Bundesliga sides:

“Yes, there were. But I blocked it immediately because I simply didn’t want it.”

The 35-year-old had also received enquiries from Saudi Arabia about a lucrative move to the Middle East, however, like Lionel Messi, Reus opted to move to the MLS. On the interest from Saudi, Reus said:

“I did a lot of research on the country, which was a lengthy process. But then the job in the USA grabbed me more.”

On the West Coast of America, Reus has already hit the ground running scoring and assisting in his debut against Atlanta United as well as featuring in a loss against St Louis City. The Galaxy, made famous by David Beckham, are currently first in the Western Conference but second overall to Inter Miami in the Supporters Shield.
