Marco van Basten did not mince his words after UEFA's decision to allow the Villarreal vs Barcelona match to be played on American soil. The legendary former Ajax, AC Milan and Netherlands striker, now 60 years old, expressed outrage at a move he considers contrary to the very essence of European football.

"Why on earth is Villarreal vs Barcelona being played in the United States? What are we doing? Is this some kind of comedy show?" he raged, before adding: "It’s completely ridiculous. And, by the way, it’s also cheating! For me, this means the total bankruptcy of La Liga. UEFA must put a stop to this."

Triple Ballon d'Or winner and global football icon, Van Basten believes that such a move "destroys the football traditions built over centuries" and puts the very culture of European sport in jeopardy. A fiery outburst, fitting for a man who has always remained deeply attached to the historic values of the beautiful game.
