Marcos Rojo has been hit with a four-match ban after his red card in Racing Club’s home defeat by River Plate last Sunday, leaving his future at the club in serious doubt.

He was dismissed by Sebastián Zunino after a VAR review while Racing trailed 1-0. The incident involved a hand on River defender Lucas Martínez Quarta during an attack by Gustavo Costas’s side, and was followed by a torrent of insults at the 38-year-old referee. According to SuperDepor.com, his chances of playing for Racing again are viewed as minimal.

Audio of Zunino’s announcement to the stadium following the review made the abuse audible to the crowd.

The centre-back, formerly of Estudiantes and Boca Juniors, was also involved in a separate episode with ex team-mate Cristian Medina immediately after Racing’s second Copa Sudamericana match.

On Thursday, the club began seriously considering terminating his productivity-based contract. However, it is not ruled out that the former Manchester United defender sees out his deal, which runs until 30 June, in the middle of the World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada.
