Marcos arrived at Palmeiras in the early 1990s and immediately made an impression on team-mates and coaches.
According to Nosso Palestra, he travelled from Oriente in São Paulo state for a trial. His imposing frame and Chitãozinho e Xororó-style hair stood out despite raw technique.
Goalkeeping coach Carlos Pracidelli recalled that his work with Marcos began in 1992, when all youth evaluations passed through him. After a few days at the Academy in June 1992, Marcos was approved to stay and continue his path.
The Palmeiras v Corinthians derby was depicted as an atypically tense occasion. Victory brings celebration while defeat invites sharper criticism, a game that can shape a player’s life for better or worse.
Marcos and Marcelo Moreira shared the junior goalkeeping duties and won the 1992 state juniors title. Moreira believed it ended a wait of more than a decade, with Marcão the starter and him the reserve.
Now 52, Moreira has lived in the United States for 13 years, in Rochester near the Canadian border. The drive to New York takes five and a half hours.
Last year he watched two Palmeiras matches at the Club World Cup, against Inter Miami in the group stage and Chelsea in the quarter-finals, and was recognised by a supporter at one of them. He coaches goalkeepers at universities and runs a summer programme.
