Marcus Edwards explains decision to represent Cyprus | OneFootball

Marcus Edwards has explained his decision to represent Cyprus at international level, saying he wants to make his family and the country’s supporters proud.

The Burnley winger spoke to the media as Cyprus prepared to begin their UEFA Nations League C Group 2 campaign against Montenegro.

Edwards previously represented England through the youth ranks, earning 48 caps and scoring 14 goals from Under-17 to Under-20 level. However, his Cypriot heritage ultimately influenced his decision to switch allegiance.

The 27-year-old, whose father is English and mother is Cypriot, has strong ties to the country and regularly visits his grandparents there.

“I live in an area of England with a lot of Cypriots, and I want to make them proud,” Edwards said. “I have a deep connection to my Cypriot roots, and I come here every summer to see my grandparents.”

The former Spurs has also taken up Cypriot citizenship and hopes to help the national team reach a major tournament.

“It is a proud moment for me and my family. I want to help Cyprus qualify for a major tournament, win matches and score goals,” he added.

Edwards is one of four players in Apostolos Mantzios’ squad born outside Cyprus, alongside Fabiano Freitas, Nick Tsaroulla and Joel Mall.

Cyprus will also face Latvia and Armenia during the international window.
