Barcelona sporting director Deco has clearly stated the club’s position on completing a permanent swoop for Manchester United loanee Marcus Rashford during the upcoming January transfer window.
Rashford has looked like a player reborn since joining Barcelona in the summer.
Having been made abundantly clear that Rashford did not have a future at United while Ruben Amorim remained head coach, a decision was made to offload him, either temporarily or permanently.
A number of suitors lined up for Rashford but he consistently maintained that Barcelona was his dream destination. He eventually got his wish and the forward has certainly grabbed the opportunity with both hands.
Rashford has emerged as one of Barcelona’s key players, with the Englishman playing a decisive role in the side’s title defence. He is now up to an impressive 15 goal contributions in 16 appearances across all competitions since joining the Catalan giants.
The 28-year-old was sensational over the weekend, supplying two assists as Barcelona beat Celta Vigo 4-2 at Estadio de Balaídos.
When Rashford was taken off late into the game, he was afforded a standing ovation by the visiting supporters.
Rumours are already rife that Barcelona are working on making his stay a permanent one, but Deco has insisted that a final decision has yet to be made. Deco particularly emphasised that Barcelona will not trigger their buy option in January.
Asked about the likelihood of a January transfer, the Barcelona sporting director answered [as quoted by Metro], “If we are doing well and there are no surprises, I don’t think it’s necessary.”
“We know exactly where we can improve and the difficulties we face. Last season, we also went through some difficult moments and we were able to overcome them.”
Deco continud, “When we lower the intensity, we suffer. We need to have the best players. There are no excuses, but when you can’t make changes because of injuries and they affect our midfield.”
“There are things to improve even when we win.”
Barcelona are in second place in La Liga, three points adrift of bitter rivals Real Madrid.
