Manchester City are undergoing a rapid reset under new manager Enzo Maresca after Pep Guardiola’s departure, with senior exits already including Bernardo Silva and John Stones. According to L'Équipe, Rodri has given his agreement to Barcelona, intensifying the shake-up to both squad and style.
Phil Foden, who featured in pre-season against a selection of South Korean players, is expected to take on greater responsibility.
On 24 July, in his first press conference as City manager, Maresca said he did not yet know his captain. He named Erling Haaland, Ruben Dias and Rodri as options.
It now appears likelier the armband will go to one of the first two, with Rodri, 30, contracted until 2027, the subject of persistent interest from Real and Barça.
The 2024 Ballon d'Or turned down an extension with City at the end of last season, and indications are he favours a return to Spain.
