The Spaniard is a Ballon d’Or contender after last year’s campaign with Arsenal and Spain.

Can Arsenal upset Chelsea?

Arsenal played second fiddle to Chelsea in the WSL yet again last season as the Blues dominance in England continued.

While the Gunners struggled in the league they did win the Champions League for the first time.

When speaking ahead of the new season, Mariona Caldentey seemed confident on Arsenal’s chances at the league.

“We need to be a bit more consistent. Last season was a roller-coaster, but winning the Champions League was something amazing for the club. I hope that gives us more confidence,” she said.

“I want to win all the trophies, of course. That’s team sport, and that’s our goal. And then when things go well, then the other things come for the individual as well.”

“I would love to win the WSL,” she added. “That’s something that we really have in our head and then, of course, the cups.”

Chelsea are sure to be short favourites to win the WSL with betting sites, but the Gunners will be right in behind once again.

Mariona Caldentey: Ballon d’Or contender

Mariona Caldentey – who joined Arsenal last summer – was crucial to the club’s success last season and she also played a key role in Spain’s impressive year.

The 29-year-old scored 19 goals for Arsenal in all competitions through 2024/25 and was named PFA Player of the Year.

With four goal contributions at the Euros this summer as well, Caldentey is now a hot contender for this year’s Ballon d’Or.

When asked why she thinks she is in contention for the award, the Spaniard credited her defensive contributions for the Gunners.

“Here, I had a defensive work as well to do – and I do it well,” Caldentey said. “So I think maybe people were a bit surprised with that.

“We know what we want, and it’s to fight for all the trophies we can.

However a lack of titles could prevent Caldentey from winning the award – something that she is keen to change.

“I’m quite new here, so I haven’t won any of those trophies, so that’s what’s in my head right now.

“Chelsea has been amazing these last years because it’s not that easy to be that consistent. And I think what we want now is to start strong the season.”

Chelsea have won the WSL for the last six consecutive seasons with Arsenal the only other club to have lifted the title since 2015.
