Mark McKenzie will leave Toulouse this winter to rejoin Philadelphia Union, returning after two and a half seasons in France.

The club said in a statement that the United States defender, 27, will rejoin the club that developed him from the start of January.

Toulouse and the MLS side have reached an agreement in principle over the transfer. Philadelphia are sixth in the Eastern Conference and virtually assured of a play-off berth. He has 30 caps, featured at the World Cup, and has made 72 appearances for Toulouse in all competitions.

He joined Toulouse from Genk. Before Ligue 1 resumed, sporting director Viktor Bezhani aimed to give 19-year-old Seny Koumbassa greater responsibility. The French defender started the last two matches, a 2-2 draw with Lorient and a 3-2 win over Le Havre, alongside McKenzie, with Rasmus Nicolaisen hampered by a calf problem.

Koumbassa’s role could become more prominent after the break.
