Olympique de Marseille have avoided exclusion from Europe and will play in the Europa League, but must pay a fine of 10 million euros.
UEFA confirmed that Marseille have been sanctioned for breaching its financial rules, and said the club could face exclusion from the next European competition it qualifies for within the next three seasons if it does not return to compliance within a year. It also imposed a restriction on registering new players for next season's Europa League, with no further details provided.
The club also faces an upcoming appearance before the DNCG, French football's financial watchdog.
In 2022, Marseille accepted a reduced 2 million euros penalty, including 1.7 million suspended, in exchange for a settlement committing the club to return to financial fair play limits, namely a deficit below 60 million euros across three seasons to be covered by the shareholder.
Net losses have since deepened, moving from 12.6 million euros in 2022-23 to 39 million in 2023-24, then 105 million the following season, the highest figure since Frank McCourt took over in 2016.
