L’Équipe recently reported that Marseille midfielder Gerson would like to leave the French club after a massive drop in his game time under the management of Igor Tudor.
Speaking ahead of OM’s Champions League game against Eintracht Frankfurt, Tudor discussed why Gerson had not played much for his team. As reported by L’Équipe, Tudor said:
“You can ask this question to every coach in the world. The most difficult thing for a coach is to choose the eleven players and the five substitutes. I like all my players, and I think they are all strong and they all have the quality to play. But unfortunately, they can’t all be happy.
“It’s the same for Gerson, I like him a lot, he is a fantastic talent. But I have to make choices that I believe are the best for the team at this moment. It’s never against anyone. It’s for the team. It’s normal for an agent to come in like this and give interviews. It’s really not worth making a big deal about it. This kind of thing happens all the time in football and will always happen.”
Since the start of the 2022/23 season, the 25-year-old Brazilian has played just 523 minutes of football across all competitions.
Tudor, who became the manager of OM in the summer of 2022 after the departure of Jorge Sampaoli, has handed the player only eight league appearances so far. Although Gerson has a contract with the French club until June 2026, his father (also an agent of the midfielder) has already hinted that the player could leave the club sooner rather than later. The situation was addressed by the Croatian in the press conference.
