Marseille will face PSG in Kuwait on 8 January without the backing of their travelling supporters after fan groups said they will boycott the Trophée des Champions.

The groups informed the club during a meeting on Friday, and, according to ICI Provence, plan to stay away despite an offer to subsidise part of the costs.

The relocation was decided by the LFP and is expected to generate 3.5 million euros. In early November head coach Roberto De Zerbi said he did not understand why they had to go to Kuwait, speaking after the 3-0 win over Brest.

On Thursday president Pablo Longoria, who sits on the LFP board, struck a more measured tone. He argued for playing in France alongside their fans, which he supports, but said he could also see the commercial and international development case for staging games abroad.

He added the competition's value for spectators could still be improved.
