An update on the future of Mason Greenwood, who spent last season on loan at Getafe, has been provided today amid reports linking him with a return to La Liga.

The 22-year-old has rejected offers from various clubs in La Liga in favour of a move to Olympique Marseille. As reported by Fabrizio Romano, the French side presented a €30m offer to Manchester United, which is the player’s parent club.

The offer also includes a substantial sell-on clause, as this was a crucial component for any deal to be considered acceptable by Man United. This clause is set to be around 50%, meaning United could receive a hefty fee in the future if the forward continues to thrive in France.

Clubs such as Barcelona and Atlético Madrid were put off by the Red Devils’ asking price, while Getafe could only afford to take the player on loan with an option to buy. The Premier League giants ideally wanted a permanent sale to help them fund the arrival of new signings, however they were also open to a loan with an obligation to buy if Getafe met their high asking price.

The Englishman was also subject to interest from Lazio, however it was Olympique Marseille who moved quickly and made an improved offer.
