The EFL have confirmed the team of match officials to oversee Manchester City’s Carabao Cup quarter-final tie against Brentford this week.

Both sides have an opportunity to take another huge step towards potentially becoming the first recipients of major silverware at the very top of English football, with victory securing a place in the last-four of the Carabao Cup.

For Pep Guardiola and his Manchester City side, they have taken on Football League opposition in their previous two rounds by defeating Huddersfield Town 0-2 in West Yorkshire, before dismissing of Swansea City in South Wales via a 1-3 scoreline.

Brentford have had a slightly longer run against firmer opposition, too. Keith Andrews’ men defeated Bournemouth away from home in round two thanks to a 0-2 victory, before winning 4-2 on penalties after an initial 1-1 draw at home to Aston Villa in round three.

Round four then saw the Bees take on Grimsby Town – known for their own heroics by knocking Manchester United out of the competition at Blundell Park – and with ease, defeat the Mariners thanks to a 0-5 victory in North East Lincolnshire.

Now, ahead of the meeting between Manchester City and Brentford, the English Football League have now announced the list of match officials to oversee proceedings at the Etihad Stadium!

Match Referee

Overseeing proceedings between Manchester City and Brentford at the Etihad Stadium this week will be Premier League referee Sam Barrott, the EFL have confirmed.

Barrott has been busy across competitions so far this season by taking charge of 18 matches across all competitions so far in the Premier League, UEFA Youth League, UEFA Conference League qualifiers, UEFA European Under-17 Championship qualifiers, EFL Cup, and UEFA European Under-17 Championship qualifiers.

In those matches, Barrott has issued a total of 76 yellow cards to date, although just one straight red card, awarding a total of seven penalty-kicks in the process.

As for Manchester City and their past crossovers with referee Sam Barrott, Pep Guardiola’s side have won two and lost two of their four contests officiated by the match official, with the last out of those outings being the 2-1 away defeat at Newcastle United earlier this season.

That fixture certainly did not come and go without officiating controversy either, with Barrott adjudging that a late tackle from Fabian Schar on Phil Foden was not deserving of a penalty kick in Manchester City’s favour.

Assistant Referees

Accompanying Sam Barrott on the Etihad Stadium pitch on Wednesday night will be an assistant referee pairing of Timothy Wood and Nick Greenhalgh, the EFL have announced.

Video Assistant Referees

Video Assistant Referee technology will not be in action.

Unless every home club in the round has access to the system, it will not be deployed, and with several lower-league clubs still in the competition, VAR will not be in use.

Fourth Official

Standing between the two dugouts and managing events concerning Pep Guardiola and Keith Andrews’ respective benches will be the appointed fourth official for the contest, Farai Hallam.
