Samuel Barrott will be the referee charged with on-field match duties when Manchester City travel to Newcastle United this weekend, the Premier League have confirmed.
Pep Guardiola’s side will return to English top-flight action on Saturday evening when they travel to the North-East for a battle with Eddie Howe’s ever-ambitious and often-impressive Magpies squad.
Off the back of the final international break of the calendar year, and many of Manchester City’s stars buoyed by the fact that they have now qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup with their respective nations, the Sky Blue outfit will no doubt be full of confidence.
Last time out in Premier League action, it was a statement result for Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City side as they dismissed of the reigning Champions of England comfortably in a 3-0 win at the Etihad Stadium.
First-half goals from Erling Haaland and Nico Gonzalez were added to by a sensational Jeremy Doku effort in the second-half, securing all three points and leaving Arne Slot’s Liverpool side well off the pace albeit early on in the ongoing campaign.
Eddie Howe’s side did not have the same fortune in their last contest before the pause for national team duties, as they collapsed to a 3-1 defeat on the road at Brentford off the back of a 2-0 win in UEFA Champions League action against Athletic Bilbao.
Now, ahead of the meeting between Newcastle United and Manchester City, the Premier League have announced the list of match officials to oversee proceedings at the St James’ Park!
Handed the on-field match officiating duties at St James’ Park this weekend will be match referee Samuel Barrott, the Premier League have confirmed this week ahead of the contest.

Throughout those 14 matches this campaign, Barrott has a record of 63 yellow cards issued, one straight red card, and three penalties awarded in the process.
Samuel Barrott has only officiated Manchester City on three occasions, with the last contest being a 0-6 victory on the road for Pep Guardiola’s side at Ipswich last campaign, and the other two results being a 2-1 defeat at Brighton and a 3-1 home win against Burnley in January 2024.
In those matches, a total of six yellow cards were handed out for offences, no second yellow or straight red card dismissals, nor were there any penalties awarded for teams involved in such fixtures.

Standing between the two dugouts on Saturday evening and managing events concerning Eddie Howe and Pep Guardiola’s respective benches will be the appointed fourth official, Leigh Doughty.
