Crystal Palace moved in front against Fiorentina in their UEFA Conference League quarter-final after a contentious penalty converted by Jean-Philippe Mateta.

Football Italia notes that the decision sparked debate. The spot-kick followed Dodo fouling Evan Guessand in the area after the forward had already scuffed his effort, and the contact did not affect play.

Whether it should have stood remains disputed, but the yellow card shown to Dodo in the aftermath, likely for dissent, will rule him out of the second leg in Florence.

Shortly after, Tyrick Mitchell doubled the Premier League side’s advantage, pouncing on a rebound after the hosts forced a fine save from David De Gea.

Fiorentina now face a steep task, or at minimum must limit the damage to avoid too great a hurdle before the return.
