Revelations this week regarding Mateus Fernandes should have prompted Manchester United to take action, strategically positioning themselves to move for him.
According to a report covered by The Peoples Person, it was suggested that if relegation-threatened West Ham United were to drop into the Championship, Fernandes would be available through a bargain release clause, one INEOS were keen to pounce on.
Intriguingly, the report claimed that, faced with the risk of losing their summer signing for far less than the £42 million they paid Southampton, the Hammers were considering cashing in on the Portuguese midfielder this winter.
So, rather than allow him to depart in the summer for a cut-price fee of £27 million, they could look to recoup a more reasonable sum now.
As speculation gathered pace, attention turned to whether United might approach the East London club this January to beat Manchester City to the deal. A fresh twist has emerged.
According to Claret and Hugh, West Ham were left stunned by the rumours surrounding Fernandes, who has arguably been their standout performer this season.
They reveal:
“West Ham were quick to shut down the speculation, responding simply with ‘not true’ when asked if Fernandes had the reported buyout clause written into his deal.”
“Fernandes will not be available on a cut-price deal.”
From that revelation, it is clear that if the Portuguese midfielder is to leave West Ham, it will be at a premium.
Fernandes has been everywhere for West Ham this season, emerging as a rare bright spark in a struggling side. He has completed the most passes, recoveries, and tackles in the team, while ranking second for chances created and assists.
Versatile enough to operate across midfield, Fernandes offers qualities United could sorely use.
He has the potential to be one of the standout signings as United look to overhaul their engine room, particularly with Casemiro leaving and doubts lingering over Manuel Ugarte’s long-term future.
However, while United may be prepared to spend heavily to get this deal over the line, City’s interest complicates the pursuit.
