Leeds United’s 2019/20 promotion cohort have sent warm messages to Barry Douglas after the left-back announced his retirement.
The player said in a post that it was time to say goodbye to the playing side, adding he had never imagined a career of almost 500 games and multiple titles across countries, and that he looked back with pride after giving everything.
Douglas joined from Wolves in summer 2018 for around £3million, the first permanent signing of Marcelo Bielsa’s tenure. He made 44 appearances across two Championship seasons under the Argentinian and helped deliver a memorable promotion.
The Scotland international did not make a Premier League appearance for Leeds, spending 2020/21 on loan at Blackburn Rovers before departing when his contract expired the following year. A 17-year career also took in Lech Poznan, Dundee United and Konyaspor.
In total he made 455 senior appearances for seven clubs in four countries. His honours include Championship titles with Leeds and Wolves, two Ekstraklasa crowns with Lech Poznan and domestic cups in Poland and Türkiye.
Tributes arrived from Mateusz Klich, Patrick Bamford, Luke Ayling, Gaetano Berardi, Leif Davis and Tyler Roberts, who praised his career and character. Klich even saluted his Polish language skills, while others thanked him for memories and guidance.
