Matheus Nascimento has signed for Grêmio, seeking a reset after a stuttering rise at Botafogo and an uneven spell at Los Angeles Galaxy. The Niterói-born striker is 22.
To facilitate the move, Grêmio used a Botafogo debt as credit. O Globo reported in April that more than R$ 20 million remained on Nathan Fernandes and Cuiabano, and Grêmio have not confirmed the amount offset.
Promoted in pre-SAF Botafogo, he signed pro terms at 16 in 2020 during a relegation season and quickly drew suitors, including a rejected 23 million euro bid from a Portuguese club in 2021.
He played 37 times in 2022, often as the reference at 1.85m. After starting the Carioca, he lost his place to Erison, then saw minutes reduced by Tiquinho Soares, while beginning work under Luís Castro, now his coach again.
Botafogo turned down 9 million euros from Nottingham Forest in July 2023. In 2024 he was behind Tiquinho and Janderson and made only nine appearances as the team won the league and Libertadores.
Loaned to LA Galaxy in February 2025, he played 28 times, starting 16, scoring six, all as a starter, and adding three assists. An early injury cost about a month. The loan was extended, yet a 7 million dollar 50% starts clause was not triggered, with 10 further outings and one start, and Galaxy missed the playoffs.
At Grêmio he bolsters a role thinned by André Henrique’s move to Göztepe of Türkiye, and he will compete with first-choice Carlos Vinicius and Braithwaite.
