Matsuki double powers Southampton's surge to seventh

Southampton thrashed Queens Park Rangers 5-0 at St Mary's to climb from 11th to seventh in the Championship.

Finn Azaz opened the scoring in the ninth minute with a low strike from outside the box after Ryan Manning's pass.

Kuryu Matsuki doubled the lead in the second minute of first half stoppage time, glancing in Léo Scienza's cross from a corner.

After the restart, Matsuki added his second with a neat finish (50.). Scienza then swept in on the break from Azaz's pass (59.). James Bree capped it with a driven effort from distance (70.).

Daniel Peretz tipped over a rising attempt from Harvey Vale before the hour, while Taylor Harwood-Bellis had earlier struck the post.

Saints registered nine shots on target from 13 attempts and enjoyed 57.3% possession. Queens Park Rangers managed one effort on target from five attempts.
