Wolves technical director Matt Jackson has described the £38m sale of Joao Gomes to Aston Villa as the responsible decision after the 25-year-old completed his move across the West Midlands.

Gomes spent three and a half years at Molineux after a £15m switch from Flamengo in 2023 and was widely expected to leave following relegation, though Villa were not seen as the likeliest destination at the start of the summer. According to ExpressAndStar.com, Unai Emery’s plans changed after Youri Tielemans joined Manchester United and Amadou Onana suffered a serious knee injury.

Villa then moved quickly to secure Gomes, with Jackson arguing the sale served Wolves’ broader interests as they rebuild under new boss Cesar Peixoto. He lauded Gomes as a model professional and family man, backing him to enjoy an outstanding career.

Jackson framed the exit as part of a sustainable approach for clubs without unlimited resources, adding that supporters have generally understood the need to make such calls. The focus, he said, is to become stronger collectively.

Looking to the remainder of the window, Jackson voiced confidence in a strong finish. Kieran Trippier and Raul Jimenez arrived early in the summer, while since Peixoto replaced Rob Edwards only winger Rafiki Said has joined. After two weeks of training, he highlighted improving bonds within the squad and said there will be changes before the deadline, while stressing they like their current shape.
