Lothar Matthäus has defended Florian Wirtz amid scrutiny over the 23-year-old’s start at Liverpool.
“The media in Germany and England are being unfair to Florian Wirtz,” he said, speaking to RTL/Sky.
Wirtz has faced heavy criticism for not matching expectations since his big-money switch from Bayer Leverkusen in summer 2025. He is yet to score for Liverpool after six appearances this season.
He did find the net for Germany in last week’s 2-0 win over Serbia.
Matthäus said Wirtz is “an outstanding player and absolutely indispensable for the German national team.”
“I have some contacts in England and regularly hear that he's putting in very good performances. Perhaps sometimes he doesn’t have the standout moment like he did with that outstanding goal against Serbia. At Liverpool, he is involved in sequences that subsequently lead to goals,” Matthäus added.
