Maurício, of Palmeiras, is now eligible to represent Paraguay.

According to Globo.com, he has a father born in the neighbouring country, has completed naturalisation, and is already on FIFA's list of players who have switched confederation.

He can be called by Gustavo Alfaro, including for the World Cup. Paraguay qualified with the last direct South American berth and will make their first finals appearance since 2010.

Maurício previously represented Brazil at youth level and had been considering this option since at least 2022, when he emerged at Internacional.

If selected, he could line up alongside fellow Palmeiras players Gustavo Gómez and Ramón Sosa.

This season he has played six games for Palmeiras, scoring two goals.
