Allan’s move to Manchester City has opened a place at Palmeiras, and the club do not intend to seek a like-for-like signing, with Mauricio emerging as the leading in-house answer.
According to Nosso Palestra, the board will back Abel Ferreira’s squad depth, leaving competition to define the role vacated by Allan.
Mauricio has impressed since the World Cup after gaining experience with Paraguay. In July, in Palmeiras’ first game after the tournament, he scored twice in a 3-1 win over Coritiba.
He then hit four goals in four matches, intensifying his push for a starting berth. Inside the club he is viewed as assuming greater responsibility and returning at a different level.
Palmeiras are weighing internal options, with Mauricio, Felipe Anderson, Jhon Arias, Khellven and Agustín Giay considered for Allan’s duties. One possible set-up has Mauricio higher on the left and Arias on the right.
The hierarchy have signalled there will be no automatic replacement unless an exceptional market opportunity appears. Palmeiras face Santos on Wednesday at Nubank Parque in the Copa do Brasil quarter-final first leg, with Allan unavailable and Mauricio vying with Felipe Anderson for the spot.
