Wigan Athletic have announced the departure of winger Gavin Massey when his contract expires at the end of June.
Massey has been with the Latics for the last five seasons making 166 appearances and scoring 13 goals during his team.
The 29-year-old was part of the side that gained promotion to the Championship back in the 2017/18 season and he has been a solid part of the team since arriving.
This season, Massey featured for his side 46 times scoring two goals and providing three assists in all competitions playing his part in the Latics’ promotion back to the Championship.
Following his departure from the club, current Wigan midfielder Max Power took to Instagram to say his goodbye as he shared Massey’s post on his story accompanied by the caption: “A great player and even better lad @gavin_massey you’ll be missed massively both on and off the pitch. Good luck with what comes next Gavler.”
What is next for the 29-year-old is yet to be found out but with the player having played consistently at League One level for the past number of seasons, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him announce signing for a new club in the coming weeks as sides start their summer business.

The Verdict:
Gavin Massey has been a brilliant servant to Wigan over the past five years being a consistently solid player who has versatility and composure on the ball.
However, following Wigan’s promotion to the Championship this season, it’s not a surprise to see the player depart especially as he is at a more senior age. Furthermore, as much as he provides off the pitch, Leam Richardson will probably be looking for some new blood to fuel the attack in his side in the hope that the Latics can retain their Championship status next season.
However, the tribute from his teammate shows how valued he was as a player and a person at Wigan and it seems fitting that in his final season at the club, they gained promotion to the Championship again having gone full circle.
