Real Madrid have confirmed that Mbappé has a sprain in his left knee and will continue conservative treatment, with no return date set. The club said in a statement that tests by French specialists, overseen by their medical staff, endorsed the approach and that his progress will be monitored.

The French forward has been managing the problem since December. It has cost him important matches and left him pushing through others before being told to stop again.

On Monday he travelled to Paris for assessment. Surgery had been discussed if the conservative route did not work, and the current plan remains to persist without going under the knife.

The recovery has not gone as hoped and frustration around the situation has grown. An earlier plan for a short lay-off has given way to caution.

He already paused earlier in the year and missed the Spanish Super Cup, yet the discomfort did not ease.

He is now set to pause again, with the Manchester City second leg a tentative target rather than a deadline. Any setback could revive surgical options, and the decision comes with Madrid’s season on the line and a summer World Cup where he is expected to lead France.
