Real Madrid’s recent setbacks had all come when Kylian Mbappe failed to find the net. After a spectacular start to the season, he had hit a lean patch, which coincided with a run of three winless games for the team.
Amidst growing pressure, Real Madrid needed to escape their slump and it was Mbappe who rose to the occasion last night against Olympiacos. And he did it in the best possible way and at a moment of maximum difficulty.
After Real Madrid went behind in Athens, the French superstar turned things out in a spectacular fashion, scoring a stunning hat-trick in under seven minutes to put his team in the driving seat. The forward would add a fourth in the second half to ensure the Merengues’ win.
By doing so, Mbappe now stands alongside three of the best players to have represented Real Madrid on the list of footballers to score four goals in a single European Cup match for the club.

Cristiano Ronaldo (2015-16, Malmo), Ferenc Puskas (Feyenoord 1965-66 and Eintracht 1959-60) and Alfredo Di Stefano (Wiener 1958-59 and Sevilla 1957-58) are the other Real Madrid players to score four in a single match, with Mbappe now joining them on the esteemed list.
With his goals last night, Mbappe has taken his season tally to 22 goals, nine of them in the Champions League in only five matches.
He had previously scored a brace against Marseille, a hat-trick against Kairat Almaty, and now a super hat-trick vs Olympiacos.
Mbappe did not achieve the feat at the Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium alone. He had several teammates who helped shape his historic night.
The first was Vinicius Jr., who assisted the opening goal with a superb outside-of-the-boot pass. He was also involved in the fourth goal after a brilliant individual run to the byline. Arda Guler and Eduardo Camavinga supplied the assists for the remaining two goals.
