Wes Burns has praised the ‘special group’ he is part of at Ipswich Town as they moved to within one point of the Premier League.

Ipswich Town close in on promotion to the Premier League

After Kieran McKenna’s side were promoted from League One last year, many expected them to be competitive on their return to the second tier.

However, few envisaged the Tractor Boys would have the outstanding campaign that they’ve had, as they currently sit second in the table having picked up 93 points in 45 games.

Ipswich went into last night’s game at Coventry City knowing they needed four points from their final two fixtures to guarantee promotion, and they battled to a 2-1 success at the CBS Arena, thanks to goals from Kieffer Moore and Cameron Burgess.

Therefore, a point at home to a Huddersfield side that are effectively already relegated, will be enough to see the Suffolk outfit back in the top-flight.

Wes Burns sends Ipswich Town message

Of course, it’s been a real collective effort for Ipswich, but Wes Burns was particularly impressive last night, as he offered a reminder of his undoubted quality down the right flank.

The 29-year-old was key to promotion in the previous campaign, but he has endured an injury-hit 2024, even though he’s still made 34 appearances so far this season.

After missing five key games due to injury in the busy March and April period, McKenna welcomed Burns back for the 3-3 draw at Hull City on Saturday, and he was in the starting XI again in the Midlands on Tuesday.

Burns played a key role in the opener, as his smart run in behind and excellent pull-back allowed Moore to fire in, and he was a constant threat as he got 80 minutes under his belt before he went off after feeling tightness in his calf.

The ex-Fleetwood man was well enough to join in the post-game celebrations, and he shared several photos on Instagram as he sent a passionate message to the supporters.

Memories to last a lifetime, what a seriously special group! One to go.”

Given his importance to McKenna since the head coach was appointed, Burns is sure to be in the team on Saturday if he is fully fit and available.

Wes Burns will be desperate to seize Premier League chance

Burns’ rise is part of what makes the Ipswich story so exceptional, as he is a player who has spent his entire career in the Football League, aside from a loan spell in Scotland with Aberdeen, and another in the National League with Forest Green.

So, he has certainly come up the hard way, with many of his teammates having a similar path to get to this level.

That hunger and determination to do well has been integral to their success this season, and the players will now be desperate to finish the job, and to become heroes at Portman Road by taking Ipswich back to the Premier League.
