Memphis accepted blame after missing a first-half penalty in Corinthians’ 1-0 derby defeat to Palmeiras at Neo Química Arena on Sunday in the seventh and penultimate round of the Campeonato Paulista. According to Meu Timao, the Dutch forward said he took responsibility for the miss in a post after the match.
The spot kick came on 37 minutes after goalkeeper Carlos Miguel struck Gustavo Henrique in the face and referee Raphael Claus awarded a penalty. As he stepped up, Memphis slipped on the turf and sent his effort wide.
The slip happened at the same patch of turf where Palmeiras’ Andreas Pereira was said to have made a small hole before the kick. After the match, coach Dorival Júnior criticised the lack of intervention from the officials.
Memphis felt the scoreline did not reflect the game, with Corinthians showing greater desire but lacking efficiency, and he accepted responsibility for the decisive moment. Head held high, belief in the team and confidence that, with the support of their loyal fans, another trophy will arrive soon.
It was his second penalty miss since joining Corinthians, and both matches ended in defeat. In May 2025 he attempted a chipped effort against Mirassol, but goalkeeper Walter saved.
Corinthians, with Memphis available, are scheduled to face Red Bull Bragantino at 20:00 on Thursday 12 February at Neo Química Arena in the third round of the Campeonato Brasileiro.
