Corinthians executive Marcelo Paz said Memphis Depay would have to cover any Conmebol fine levied on the club for failing to pass through the mixed zone after their Libertadores exit, if one is imposed. According to Globo.com, the forward did not go through the area post-match.

Memphis missed a last-gasp penalty against Estudiantes, wasting the chance to level the score, before bypassing the mixed zone that players are expected to pass, though interviews are not mandatory.

Speaking at CT Joaquim Grava on Thursday, Paz recalled the obscene gesture Memphis directed at Estudiantes fans in the first leg in La Plata, Argentina, and said the Dutchman had offered to pay if a fine arose from that incident.

He said he believes the same approach applies to the mixed zone matter and that it was the player’s decision not to pass through. Paz noted others also skipped the area and that Memphis was upset and felt especially exposed after the penalty.

If it was an individual act, Paz added, it is normal for the person to bear the consequences.
