Mestalla had had enough as Valencia lost to Atlético Madrid, who fielded four academy players and had their minds on the Champions League semi-final second leg against Arsenal.

As the minutes ticked by without a response from the hosts, frustration grew in the stands. As reported by AS, chants in the first half called for Carlos Corberán to go and accused players of being mercenaries who did not deserve the shirt.

Half-time brought a few tentative whistles, but two Atlético goals after the break further inflamed the mood and supporters again condemned their team’s attitude.

At full-time, the players stayed in the centre circle with Corberán beside them, and those who remained in the stands sent them off to loud jeers.

After a few minutes the squad headed for the tunnel and the stadium fell silent.
