AS reports a day that promised calm at Mestalla ended in dissent, Atlético in control and fans turning on the hierarchy.
The old Avenida Suecia ground marked its 1500th LaLiga match. Many expected a relatively simple win, with Atlético having LaLiga settled and eyes on Arsenal in the Champions League semi-final.
Valencia started on the front foot against a side packed with reserves and academy players, but the spark faded as Atlético pinned them back. The crowd tried to lift the team, to little effect.
In the 19th minute the regular anti-Meriton protest swelled, with calls for Carlos to go replacing earlier demands for Corberán’s dismissal. Players were labelled mercenaries and told they did not deserve the shirt.
Half-time changed little. Atlético stayed on top and scored two that effectively settled it, prompting louder protests and early exits.
At full-time, Corberán and his players applauded those who stayed before heading off, faces downcast. The coach defended his squad, accepted the fans’ frustration and said ultimate responsibility is his.
Hugo Duro took only brief questions. Around 100 fans waited outside as the squad walked the five metres to the bus under heavy police presence, though criticism was milder than in recent games.
Four league matches remain and Valencia still need at least three points, with two at Mestalla and trips to San Mames and Anoeta.
