FC Metz have signed Téji Savanier, 34, on a one-year deal with an option for a second after his Montpellier exit, club owner Bernard Serin announced on Monday.

The reveal was kept quiet until Savanier entered a hot press room following a briefing arranged only hours earlier without a stated agenda. Serin said there was barely any need to introduce him and praised his quality and personality.

His arrival comes days after Gauthier Hein’s departure to Nice. Regularly used behind the striker, Savanier will wear the number 10.

Out of contract at Montpellier, he made 210 appearances, scoring 50 goals with 38 assists. He had been working alone with a fitness coach while awaiting his next move.

Savanier said he spoke with Serin about a week ago and was moved by how the president described the club as family. He added that several Ligue 1 sides and clubs in Saudi Arabia showed interest, but he would not sign somewhere he did not feel right.
