Thomas Meunier has completed a move to Sunderland after a late twist scuppered Valencia’s plan to sign him as a free agent.

According to Superdeporte, the right-back had given Valencia his word after leaving Lille, but World Cup delays proved long enough for him to fly into Newcastle, undergo a medical and sign for the Wearside club.

Valencia then tried to turn back to Andrés García, but it was already too late. The former Levante player was close to a loan to Getafe under José Bordalás, with European football on the table.

Meunier was presented on Wednesday and will join the squad in early August after extra days off following Belgium’s World Cup exit to Spain. The 34-year-old said he felt excited and honoured to join the Premier League side.

He said the club’s ambition, project and desire to keep progressing made a strong impression. The chance to play in Europe also weighed on his decision, wanting to test himself against top teams and fight for trophies.

Valencia’s offer was for one year with an option of a further season on lower wages, and without European competition. Sunderland will play both domestically and in Europe this campaign.
