Thomas Meunier joins Sunderland on free with two-year deal, strongest XI outlined | OneFootball

Thomas Meunier has become Sunderland’s first signing of the summer window, joining on a free transfer and agreeing a two-year deal as the club prepare for the Europa League.

The 34-year-old right-back featured in Belgium’s run to the World Cup last 16, which ended with a 2-1 defeat by Spain, and became a free agent earlier this month after leaving Lille. Meunier said on the club website that he was excited and honoured to join, describing the Premier League as a challenge he had long wanted to experience and noting that competing in Europe was a major factor in his decision.

He added that talks left him impressed by the club’s ambition, project and desire to keep moving forward.

The Belgium international brings significant European know-how after spells with Club Brugge, Paris Saint-Germain, Borussia Dortmund and Lille, featuring in both the Champions League and Europa League.

Under Regis Le Bris, a proposed strongest XI is: GK Robin Roefs, RB Thomas Meunier, LB Trai Hume, CB Dan Ballard, CB Omar Alderete, CM Granit Xhaka, CM Noah Sadiki, CM Habib Diarra, LW Enzo Le Fee, RW Chemsdine Talbi, ST Brian Brobbey.
