Mexico advances to Round of 16, Cuba exits FIFA U-20 World Cup

MIAMI – The FIFA U-20 World Cup Chile 2025 continued on Saturday, with Concacaf nations Mexico and Cuba seeking to solidify a spot in the Knockout Stage.
Mexico punched its ticket to the Round of 16 with a win over Morocco. Cuba fell to Australia to exit the tournament in the Group Stage.
Mexico 1, Morocco 0
Mexico earned a 1-nil win over Morocco in Group C at Estadio Elías Figueroa Brander in Valparaíso, Chile.
Gilberto Mora scored the lone goal of the match in the 51’ by converting a penalty kick attempt. Mora scored his third goal of the tournament by striking to the bottom right corner. The chance originated from an Obed Vargas chance in the 50’ that was denied by a handball from Anas Tajaouart.
Mexico concludes the Group Stage as second place in the group with a 1-2-0 record. As one of the top two sides, Mexico advances to the Round of 16 to face host nation Chile next Tuesday.
Cuba 1, Australia 3
Cuba fell 3-1 to Australia in Group D at Estadio Nacional Julio Martínez Prádanos in Santiago, Chile.
Max Caputo opened the scoring in the 20’, with Daniel Bennie extending the lead in the 39’ as Australia took a two-goal lead into halftime.
Caputo sealed his brace in the 50’ as the Socceroos took a three-goal lead.
Alessio Raballo cut the deficit for Cuba in the 63’ as the Caribbean nation attempted a comeback effort.
Cuba’s campaign ends with a 0-1-2 record and a fourth-place finish in its group.
