Michael Carrick has dismissed claims Manchester United have been gifted a gentle start, insisting there is no room for complacency before Hull City.

According to Goal.com, United open with a Saturday lunchtime trip to newly promoted Hull, then host fellow newcomers Ipswich Town next week. Carrick, in his first full season in permanent charge, views it as a testing opening.

He labelled suggestions of an easy run as ridiculous and stressed that away fixtures against promoted teams are demanding, citing his past experiences. His focus is fixed on Saturday’s challenge.

United are set to be boosted by Benjamin Sesko and new goalkeeper Karl Darlow travelling after returning to full training this week. Neither featured in the club’s six pre-season friendlies and both are available.

Sesko, 23, suffered a shin injury against Liverpool in early May and missed the entire pre-season. Carrick is pleased to have him back with the group and wants to get him minutes.

Mason Mount is described as touch and go after a foot injury in the 1-1 pre-season draw with Paris Saint-Germain. He has battled fitness issues since arriving at Old Trafford, making 72 appearances across three seasons.

Carrick praised Mount’s quality and early pre-season displays, and underlined the need for rhythm to help him stay fit. He suggested Mount could be back very soon, possibly immediately.
