Leeds United and England fan Michael Hewitt, 65, has been missing for around 10 days after travelling to Barcelona en route to the United States. His family are urgently appealing for information.

According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, his last electronic contact was a WhatsApp message to a friend in Leeds in the early hours of Sunday, June 21, sent from Barcelona. A beer-rating app also showed him checking into a city bar on Saturday, June 20, and there has been no trace since.

He had told relatives he would continue to Boston to watch England play Ghana at the World Cup on June 23, but it is unknown whether he boarded the flight. The family are trying to establish if he left Barcelona.

His brother Gary said football trips were central to Mick’s life after retirement and he often arranged them himself. This journey was booked later than many of his friends, with a two-night stop in Barcelona, and they had expected the usual photos rather than silence. He described the shock of seeing Mick’s picture appear on BBC News at lunchtime.

The family have been told only Interpol can access passport and border data that would confirm if he boarded, and they feel progress has been slow despite repeated calls to the consulate and the Foreign Office. They want clarity on whether they are searching in the right place.

Support from the football community has been widespread, with Leeds and England fans and others sharing appeals. West Yorkshire Police said a missing persons report was received on Sunday, June 28.

Gary’s message to Mick is that he should make contact to say he is safe, and that many people are looking out for him.
