Blackburn Rovers have confirmed that Michael O'Neill will not continue as the club's manager.

O'Neill took over after the departure of Valérien Ismaël back in February with the Lancashire side in the relegation zone.

The 56-year-old accepted the temporary role while still manager of the Northern Ireland national team and helped turn Rovers' fortunes around.

The club ended up finishing the Championship season in 20th place, five points clear of the relegation zone. However, O'Neill will now return to focus solely on his role with Northern Ireland.

"Blackburn Rovers is a historic football club with a proud tradition and passionate supporters," O'Neill said in a message to fans about his decision.

"I have thoroughly enjoyed my time working with the players, staff and everyone around the club.

"After careful consideration, I have decided that my long-term focus must remain with Northern Ireland and the journey towards the European Championship campaign ahead. I would like to thank the Owners, Board, staff, players and supporters for the welcome and support shown to me during my time at the club."

In total, O'Neill oversaw 15 games as Rovers manager with an even record of five wins, five draws, and five defeats.
