Michael O'Neill has decided to reject the permanent role as manager at Blackburn Rovers in favour of Northern Ireland
Blackburn Rovers have received a major blow to the future of Michael O'Neill, with the Northern Irishman confirming his decision on whether he will remain in charge of the club.
Blackburn have secured their status in the Championship for another year, and whilst it wasn't pretty at times, fans around Ewood Park will be looking forward to another year in the second tier.
However, a degree of uncertainty has surrounded the club as of late, with Blackburn receiving bad news on the future of Michael O'Neill at the club.
The 56-year-old took charge in Lancashire in February following the sacking of Valerien Ismael, and, alongside his duties with the Northern Ireland men's national team, was tasked with keeping the club afloat, which he did with five wins, five draws, and five defeats.
He was then offered the chance to stay with the club by virtue of a three-year deal, which he had reportedly previously shown a willingness to sign, but has since come to a decision on his future.

It was previously reported by Alan Nixon via Patreon that O'Neill was ready to accept Blackburn's offer to remain in charge at Ewood Park, with the Northern Irishman set to step down from his role with the Northern Ireland men's national team in favour of a return to the Championship.
O'Neill had previously done similar when he took the Stoke City job in November 2019, balancing his role with the Potters and the national team, eventually keeping the Staffordshire side in the Championship and stepping down from the national team to focus his full attention on Stoke.
He was unable to guide Stoke to a top-half finish despite his best efforts and would return to the Northern Ireland role in March 2023, where he has remained ever since.
Now, he has decided that his future lies in his homeland rather than in Lancashire, as O'Neill has confirmed his rejection of the Blackburn job in a released statement by the club.
O’Neill said: "Blackburn Rovers is a historic football club with a proud tradition and passionate supporters. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time working with the players, staff and everyone around the club.
"After careful consideration, I have decided that my long-term focus must remain with Northern Ireland and the journey towards the European Championship campaign ahead. I would like to thank the owners, board, staff, players and supporters for the welcome and support shown to me during my time at the club."
This undoubtedly comes as unwelcome news to Blackburn supporters, who were led to believe that the popular manager would indeed stay in charge and guide them into next season.
O'Neill has cited his reasoning for rejecting the job as being more focused on his duties with his country ahead of the European Championships in 2028, having narrowly missed out on qualification to the World Cup to Italy in the semi-finals.
Now, Blackburn are beginning the search for a new permanent boss after O'Neill's rejection, with the club now back to square one ahead of a crucial transfer window, where they must ensure they don't get weaker, having only narrowly scraped survival this time around.

Indeed, those around Blackburn will no doubt feel a great sense of disappointment regarding O'Neill's decision to reject their advances, but cannot afford to dwell for too long.
The club should have some names lined up in preparation for this unfortunate scenario, as the hierarchy will be beginning to work tirelessly on finding a successor to the Northern Irishman.
It's a damning blow at a bad time for Blackburn, who must pick themselves up, dust themselves down, and move on, otherwise, the trouble will persist.
