The coach of Girona FC, Míchel Sánchez, appeared in the pre-match press conference ahead of tomorrow's clash against Villarreal CF at Montilivi, a match he considers very important in the fight for survival.
The coach confirmed that he has almost the entire squad available: “Everyone is available except for the long-term injured players,” and he emphasized the importance of focusing on the present: “We need to stay focused on the present; the Club has a lot at stake in the remainder of the season.”
Regarding the opponent, Míchel highlighted their potential, especially in transitions: “Villarreal is a great team, their transitions are among the best in the league. We have to show that our need is greater than Villarreal's.”
In this context, the coach called on the fans to make Montilivi a decisive factor: “We need our fans to help us overcome such a difficult match as tomorrow's.”
Míchel also emphasized the need to maintain a consistent level of play, following some inconsistencies shown in certain matches: “We must not lose our standard of play, which is why I didn’t like the first half in Pamplona at all. We need stability and regularity, but always in relation to these standards.” According to the coach, the match will need to be very controlled to have a chance of victory: “The match cannot be open; it has to be controlled by us,” he assured, also recalling the importance of the points at stake: “It’s at home, and tomorrow three very important points are on the line for us.”
Finally, Míchel reflected critically on the team’s inconsistency throughout the season: “We’ve only won three consecutive matches this season. This inconsistency needs to be corrected; I don’t like it. The good thing is that, despite the struggles, we’ve managed to overcome a very difficult situation and are now in a position to fight for survival. At the beginning, we would have signed up to be five points above the relegation zone at this stage. It’s in our hands to stay in the first division.”
The coach concluded the press conference with a personal declaration of commitment to the club: “I’m in love with Girona. I need an environment where I can be happy, and I am happy here.”
