Humble, a true team player, and undeniably ambitious. These are the words that describe Michelle Agyemang as she steps up to the England women’s national football team.
After the last international break, Agyemang moved from the Under-19s to the senior squad after the injury to Alessia Russo.
She came on the pitch when England was losing to Belgium. Within a stunning 41 seconds of her second-half substitution, she scored with her second touch for the senior team. Talk about an immediate impact.
Agyemang’s debut senior international goal came from a deep cross into the box, which the Arsenal striker was about to control before volleying it into the top corner.
“I’m really grateful for the opportunity,” said Agyemang. “I think it’s surreal, like just the manner in which it happened, and [there are] so many more things to come.”
Jess Carter described Agyemang as a perfect example of why we want the younger generation to be up here and what they can deliver.
The young Lionesses spoke about how her first official call-up for the senior team was unexpected. She was coming out of the shower, but was ultimately very excited.
Agyemang admitted that stepping into the senior squad, especially during a crucial match, could easily make a player nervous. “Coming in from Under-19s, playing a big game, and then losing at that moment, I think it was pretty nerve-wracking,” she reflected on her April call-up.
“I think it did a lot for my confidence and helped me go on to the back end of the season with Brighton, and hopefully, I will come in now to this camp.”
The young Lioness expressed immense gratitude for the trust shown in her. “I’m really grateful, you know, that she’s trusted me to come here again and show what I can do for a long time,” she said.
“It’s amazing to get that call and to be here again, and my family is so supportive. When I was telling them, my mom was screaming, and my dad was shouting as well.
“Then friends as well. Like, it’s nice to reconnect with people I haven’t spoken to for ages that are genuinely really happy for me. It’s nice to get all that support from fans, family, and friends.”
When asked when she watched England win the Euros in 2022, she saw herself being there three years later. She responded that she was quite ambitious and that it was always something on her mind.
These Nations League matches are crucial for Agyemang to show her worth so that she can board that plane to Switzerland in five weeks. She emphasized her readiness, focusing on “training well” and “supporting the team as best as possible” to help win the upcoming games.
Agyemang described her passion and eagerness, explaining, “I’ve come here because of what I’ve done before, so I think not changing the way I’ve got is making slight adjustments to help the team.”
She was also candid about areas for growth, suggesting, “Just be more careful out of possession, doing my work. I need to win the ball back, so I think just minor tweaks will help.”
Michelle Agyemang has a single goal, no matter the squad or pitch: score. Her main objective is to find the back of the net and ensure her team wins, whether at the Euros with the seniors or the Under-19s.
“I think it’s an honour to represent my country,” Agyemang remarked. “No matter where it is or what age group.”
Agyemang credits the guidance of the senior players as a major driving force in her ambition. For her, knowing that these seasoned internationals have already achieved success with England serves as powerful motivation.
