Middlesbrough are on the brink of hiring Kim Hellberg as their new manager, according to Sky Sports.

Alongside current assistant David Selini, Hellberg has agreed personal terms with Middlesbrough, who will pay a £250,000 release clause and are currently working on securing a work permit.

The Championship outfit have been in the market for a new manager since Rob Edwards’ departure to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Having also considered Raphael Wicky and Gary O’Neil, Middlesbrough outmanoeuvred Swansea City, who were close to finalising a deal with the 37-year-old.

Known for his progressive coaching style, Hellberg has established himself as a leading figure in Swedish football.

Hellberg’s coaching career began early as he started managing at just 23 years old, leading lower-tier clubs Kuddby IF and IF Sylvia to impressive promotions.

Since the start of 2024, he has guided Hammarby to consecutive second-place finishes in the Allsvenskan, Sweden’s top-tier league.

An emphasis on high-intensity pressing and quick transitional play has characterised his work at Hammarby.

Middlesbrough hope those qualities will prove beneficial as they seek a return to the Premier League for the first time since 2017.

Boro are second in the Championship, five points behind leaders Coventry City.

Despite Hellberg’s impending appointment, interim manager Adi Viveash will remain in the dugout for this weekend’s trip to Oxford United.
