Santos travel to Ambato, Ecuador, at 2,600 metres above sea level for the Copa Sudamericana last-16 second leg against Macará, with Miguelito seen as an option well versed in altitude conditions.
Diario Do Peixe notes that the Bolivian finished South American World Cup qualifying as the second top scorer with seven goals, behind Lionel Messi on eight.
Five of Miguelito’s seven were scored in Bolivia, against Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, Colombia and Venezuela, while he also netted away to Peru and Chile. He has played at higher elevations than Ambato, including La Paz above 3,600 metres.
Despite that record, he arrives without a run of games for Santos. His last outing came in the 4-2 win over Universidad Central de Venezuela (UCV) at Vila Belmiro in the Sudamericana play-off second leg, when he scored.
He has not featured since, a stretch of five matches without minutes under Cuca. Caballero has been used on the right and earned starts, reducing Miguelito’s opportunities.
The attacking midfielder has 24 appearances this season, with two goals and four assists. With preparations finishing in Ambato on Wednesday, the coach is due to finalise his starting team, and Miguelito could come back into consideration.
