AZ beat Volendam 1-0 at the AFAS Stadion to rise from sixth to fifth in the Eredivisie.
In the ninth minute, Sven Mijnans swept a left-footed finish into the top left from close range after drifting into the six-yard box.
Kayne van Oevelen kept Volendam alive with a string of saves after the restart, denying efforts from the home front line and punching away crosses under pressure.
Rick Kruys turned to Robert Muhren at half time to chase a response, but the substitute was repeatedly caught offside as the visitors struggled to create clear chances.
Late on, Jesper Tielemans forced Rome-Jayden Owusu-Oduro into a low save in the third minute of second half stoppage time, and van Oevelen headed wide from a final set piece in the fourth minute of second half stoppage time.
AZ registered 17 attempts, with eight on target. Volendam produced seven efforts and tested the goalkeeper twice.
Volendam drop from 16th to 17th. Next, AZ host Ajax in the KNVB Beker, while Volendam visit Sparta Rotterdam in the same competition.
