Mike Maignan has been retained as AC Milan captain despite criticism from former club greats and some supporters this summer, according to L'Équipe. Head coach Ruben Amorim has backed him.
The France goalkeeper has captained the side since last season.
In early June, Alessandro Costacurta, the club’s third most-capped player with 663 appearances and a pillar of the Berlusconi era, argued Maignan is not the right captain for this team.
He criticised Milan for arriving late to kick-offs 10 times and being reprimanded, calling it poor leadership. He added that if it was deliberate it was petty, and if not, worse, and said the captain should exemplify style and punctuality.
He would remove the armband from Maignan and give it to Gabbia and Modric, whom he described as stronger examples.
